History and description
Built in 1835 by the noble Rampini family from two pre‑existing fountains, the fountain takes its name from the district where the confraternity associated with Pope Celestine V once operated. Over time, it was moved, destroyed by bombings, and later rebuilt in Piazza Celestino V. Made of limestone, the fountain features a monumental loggia with six arches: the first three rest on circular columns, while the others stand on octagonal ones, each decorated in different styles and bearing inscriptions dedicated to the Di Manes and to the Rampini family.
Curiosities
Today, the fountain is celebrated not only for its beauty but also for its cultural significance. It was honored by the Italian postal service with a 120‑lira stamp and, according to tradition, is linked to the figure of Pontius Pilate. It has even been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Access
Located in a public space, the fountain is freely accessible at any time of day.
How to reach it
Situated in the historic center of Isernia, the fountain is easily reached on foot by following the signs to the old town.
A true symbol of the city of Isernia, the Fontana Fraterna is an unmissable stop for visitors, admired for both its beauty and its uniqueness.
