Trevi Fountain – one of the most iconic monuments of Rome

Autore: Redazione 01/10/2025 21:58

History and description

Built between 1732 and 1762, the Trevi Fountain is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks and among the most famous fountains in the world. Its construction was commissioned by Pope Clement XII, who entrusted the project to architect Nicola Salvi, chosen through a public competition. After Salvi’s death, Giuseppe Pannini completed the work. The fountain marks the terminal point of the ancient Roman aqueduct Aqua Virgo, built in 19 BC, which still supplies it with running water today. The structure is set against the rear façade of Palazzo Poli, blending seamlessly with the Baroque architecture of the building. Its central theme is the sea: at the center stands the figure of Oceanus, dominating a large niche on a shell‑shaped chariot drawn by sea horses guided by tritons. On either side are two allegorical statues representing Abundance and Health. The entire composition, restored and expanded several times over the centuries, is a grand celebration of water’s dominion over nature, expressed through mythological symbols and spectacular marble scenography.

Curiosities

One of the most famous traditions linked to the fountain is the coin toss. Legend has it that throwing a coin over the shoulder into the basin with the right hand over the left ensures a future return to Rome. For this reason, more than €3,000 are collected daily, which are donated to charity through Caritas of Rome. The fountain has also appeared in numerous international films, most famously in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, which immortalized the scene with Anita Ekberg stepping into the water.

Access

As an open‑air monument, the fountain is freely accessible at any time of day.

How to reach it

Located in the Trevi district, the fountain can be reached by metro (line A, stop “Fontana di Trevi”), by bus (lines 52 or 83), or on foot from nearby historic squares such as Piazza Venezia or Piazza di Spagna.

An eternal symbol of the city of Rome, the Trevi Fountain enchants thousands of visitors every day with its timeless beauty, fascinating history, and romantic charm of flowing waters.
