Fountain of the Giant – a scenic monument on the seafront

Autore: Redazione 08/10/2025 07:50

History and description

Considered one of the most significant monumental fountains in Naples, the Fountain of the Giant dates back to the early decades of the 17th century, when Viceroy Don Antonio Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba, commissioned its construction from masters Pietro Bernini and Michelangelo Naccherino. Originally, it was placed in Largo di Palazzo (today’s Piazza del Plebiscito), next to the Royal Palace and close to the colossal statue of the “Giant,” from which it took its name. Over the centuries, however, it was moved several times: first near the pier, then to the Villa del Popolo, later to Chiaia, and finally, in 1905–1906, to its current location.

The architectural structure is monumental and richly decorated. Made of white marble, it is composed of three round arches supported by four pillars or columns, surmounted by coats of arms representing the city, the viceroy, and the king—the latter in the center, upheld by cherubs. In the large central arch is a decorated basin supported by marine creatures, while in the side arches stand allegorical statues holding sea monsters from which water flows. At the far ends, two caryatids hold cornucopias, the traditional symbol of abundance and prosperity. In 2022, the fountain underwent restoration to restore its original splendor.

Curiosities

The architectural details and ornamental figures became iconic even beyond Naples: the fountain inspired the opening sequence of the television program “Carosello”, which appeared in Italian homes for many years.

Access

As it is located outdoors on the seafront, the Fountain of the Giant is freely accessible at any time.

How to reach it

Situated near Castel dell’Ovo, in the Borgo Santa Lucia district, the fountain can be reached by bus (line R2) followed by a short walk, or by metro (line 1, Toledo station) and then walking towards the seafront.

The Fountain of the Giant is therefore not only an ornamental element on the waterfront but also a living piece of Naples’ urban history.
