History and description
The Fountain of the Seven Channels is the oldest fountain in Catania, built in 1612 during the reign of Philip III of Spain. Located in the historic center, the fountain is fed by the waters of the ancient underground river Amenano and is characterized by seven spouts from which the water flows, falling into a rectangular marble basin. Originally, it served as a public water supply point for drinking water.
Above the fountain is a marble plaque with a Latin inscription commemorating the patrons and the reconstruction of the “water channels.” Over time, the fountain suffered damage and decay, but it survived the devastating earthquake of 1693. In recent years, it has undergone conservation work to improve its preservation, redefine its lighting, and repair deteriorated structures.
Curiosities
At one time, it was the only public fountain in the city from which the population drew drinking water, although today direct access to it is no longer possible.
Access
The fountain can be freely viewed from the square and from the Pescheria area.
How to reach it
Located in the heart of Catania’s historic center, the fountain is easily reachable on foot from the Cathedral (Duomo), or by using public transport serving the city center, as it is very close to the main squares and monuments.
The Fountain of the Seven Channels is therefore much more than a decorative element: it is a living piece of the city’s history, a symbol of a time when water was essential and shared.
