On 12 May MAXXI in Rome hosts Five Geometric Songs, a performance by Adelaide Cioni with original music by Dom Bouffard. The work explores the relationship between drawing, the body and sound, transforming basic geometric forms into an evolving performative language.
The performance is part of the exhibition Tragicomica. Perspectives on Italian art from the second half of the 20th century to today, on view at the museum.
In Five Geometric Songs archetypal shapes — point, line, square, triangle, circle — are embodied by five dancers wearing costumes conceived by the artist, turning graphic patterns into bodily movement. Dom Bouffard’s score dialogues with the visual rhythm, creating a synesthetic fabric where gesture and sound generate one another.
The piece continues the artist’s research into the meeting of abstraction and corporeality: drawing expands into space, acting on the body and its surrounding negative space, while light materials and movable elements build a continually shifting environment.
Practical tip: arrive a few minutes early for ticket checks and allow time for a museum visit if you have a combined ticket.
