Fede Galizia at Capodimonte: the Adoration of the Magi on display

Work: Adoration of the Magi (1610) by Fede Galizia. Location: Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Room 79, second floor.

The altarpiece by Fede Galizia, dated 1610 and part of the Bourbon collection for over two centuries, has been installed for the first time inside the Capodimonte Royal Palace. The signed work engages with late 16th- and early 17th-century visual models and enriches the museum’s presentation of Neapolitan painting from the period.

History and rediscovery

  • Commission: by merchant Baldassare Noirot for the Chapel of the Magi in Sant’Anna dei Lombardi.
  • Provenance twists: relocations following structural damage and wartime dispersals led to misattributions and loss of trace for parts of the original ensemble.
  • Identification: archival and cataloguing research completed in 2021 established the work’s authorship and location.

Visitor information

  • On display from: 2 April 2026.
  • Placement: Room 79, second-floor gallery of the Royal Palace.
  • Admission: follow the museum’s opening hours; the first Sunday of each month offers free entry (check the official site for details). The museum is also open on Easter Monday.

The museum director emphasized the initiative’s role in highlighting historic women painters and situating Galizia alongside other prominent female artists. Another work by Fede Galizia in Naples is the altarpiece San Carlo in Estasi, located at the church of San Carlo alle Mortelle.
