Design Week 2026: historic palaces and monuments open in Milan

From April 20 to 26, 2026 Milan becomes a hub of design-related initiatives, featuring special openings of historic palaces, museum programs and site-specific projects in theaters and public spaces.

This edition reaches record figures: more than 1,800 events across the city with hundreds of projects that extend beyond the historic center into peripheral neighborhoods.

Where to see palaces and monuments

Special openings include well-known historic venues and private residences that open temporarily to visitors. Notable sites include:

  • Palazzo Litta – temporary exhibitions and installations;
  • Palazzo Bovara and Palazzo Castiglioni – themed design projects;
  • Portrait Milano – initiatives curated by contemporary architecture studios;
  • Villa Mozart and Villa Necchi Campiglio – visits with special displays;
  • Palazzo del Senato and Palazzo Serbelloni – exhibitions and institutional collaborations.

Neighborhoods involved

Events are spread across many city areas: besides central hubs, new perimeters and outlying districts participate, including:

  • Brera, Cinque Vie, Durini, Isola, Statale, Tortona;
  • Porta Venezia and Monumentale;
  • Castello, San Vittore, Quadrilatero, NoLo, Cimiano, Baggio, Dergano, Barona, QT8, San Leonardo.

Cultural programs and venues

Museums and theaters join with specific programs: ADI presents activities linked to the Compasso d'Oro, the National Museum of Science and Technology hosts craft-focused projects in its stables, and theater spaces reinterpret design through sensory performances.

Practical tips for visiting

  • Check schedules and reservations: many venues require booking or timed entry;
  • Choose weekdays to avoid weekend crowds;
  • Use public transport or bike: the center can be heavily congested;
  • Consult official maps and programs to find themed routes and guided tours;
  • Verify access rules for private palaces or locations with limited capacity.

The Design Week offers a unique opportunity to explore Milan's monumental heritage in temporary and often unexpected ways: plan ahead to make the most of special openings and guided visits.
