Victory Lighthouse – a symbolic and functional monument for Trieste

Autore: Redazione 26/09/2025 08:23

History and description

Designed by Arduino Berlam after the First World War, the Victory Lighthouse is a stone structure, built with materials from different areas, standing almost 68 meters tall. It rises on the ruins of Fort Kressich, at 60 meters above sea level, and is characterized by a fluted column supported by a capital and a bronze and crystal cage housing the lantern, topped with a copper dome. Its light, with an intensity of about 1,250,000 candles, is visible from 30–35 nautical miles. Among its decorative elements are the sculpture of an Unknown Sailor by Giovanni Mayer, a commemorative inscription dedicated to those who died at sea, two shells from the Austro‑Hungarian battleship, the anchor of the first Italian ship to enter the port of Trieste, and finally, the statue of the Winged Victory placed at the top of the lighthouse.

Curiosities

One of the most fascinating details of the structure is the wings of the Winged Victory statue, designed to move slightly in order to absorb the pressure of the wind.

Access

The lighthouse is open to visitors free of charge, with schedules varying depending on the season. Access is limited to a maximum of 15 people at a time.

How to reach it

The structure can be reached by car, with parking available nearby, by public transport (buses 44 and 45 from Piazza Oberdan in Trieste), or on foot, starting from Barcola along a scenic walk.

Part of Trieste’s identity, the Victory Lighthouse offers an experience that combines architecture, panoramic views, and remembrance, making it an unmissable landmark to discover.
