Emilia-Romagna invests in Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO recognition for karst areas

The Emilia-Romagna regional government has allocated €205,000 to boost conservation and public enjoyment of its Biosphere Reserves and to support efforts toward UNESCO recognition of the region's karst landscapes. The funding aims to balance environmental protection, scientific research and sustainable tourism development.

Main intervention areas include:

  • awareness and communication campaigns to increase knowledge of the reserves' natural and cultural values;
  • conservation projects and monitoring of sensitive species and habitats;
  • training and support for local administrations, guides and tourism operators;
  • sustainable accessibility measures such as trails, signage and interpretation panels;
  • networking among parks, reserves, universities and local communities to coordinate research and enhancement activities.

Expected outcomes: improved conservation practices, increased sustainable tourism appeal, enhanced research opportunities and stronger local community involvement in natural heritage management.

Practical information for visitors to karst areas and Biosphere Reserves

  • Plan ahead: check opening times and seasonal restrictions for protected areas and visitor centers.
  • Stick to marked routes: stay on designated trails to minimize impact on fragile habitats and karst formations.
  • Learn on site: join guided tours or visit interpretation centers to better understand local geology, flora and fauna.
  • Choose sustainable options: favour local operators that follow low-impact practices, and follow recommended behaviour in caves and cavities.
  • Get involved: look for volunteer initiatives and educational activities that support reserve conservation.

This regional initiative strengthens Emilia-Romagna's commitment to protecting karst landscapes and promoting its natural heritage on the path toward international recognition such as UNESCO designation.
