Rome Line C: where archaeology and engineering meet underground

Autore: Redazione 27/03/2026 17:51

Introduction

Line C of Rome’s metro network is a major urban infrastructure project where advanced tunnelling and archaeological conservation intersect. As a fully automated line, it has extended rapid transit into eastern districts and incorporated archaeological discoveries within station spaces.

Route and key stations

The currently operational section connects Monte Compatri-Pantano to the historic centre, with stops serving densely populated eastern neighborhoods. Notable stations for visitors and researchers include:

  • Colosseum / Imperial Forums – interchange with Line B and direct access to the central archaeological area;
  • Porta Metronia – an example of station design integrating on-site finds;
  • San Giovanni and other stops that expanded service toward the city centre.

Planned extensions aim to reach additional central hubs (including Venezia and Farnesina), forming an east–west axis across the historic core.

Excavations, finds and "archaeo-stations"

Excavations uncovered layers from different periods: ancient pavements, military structures and hydraulic works. In several stations, finds have been conserved and displayed on-site, turning transit nodes into exhibition spaces. A top-down archaeological approach was used in central areas to preserve stratigraphic control during deep excavation.

Engineering methods and technical data

  • Tunnel excavation: TBM EPB machines (Earth Pressure Balance) used to control ground pressure and limit surface settlement;
  • Station depth: some platforms exceed 30 metres below street level;
  • Tunnel diameter: average around 6.7 metres;
  • Rolling stock and control: driverless trains using CBTC signalling and 1,500 V DC power;
  • Design capacity: over 24,000 passengers/hour per direction and potential daily capacity above 600,000 passengers at full operation.

Urban impact and accessibility

The line has improved access for neighbourhoods previously underserved by rail, reducing surface traffic loads. Presenting archaeological finds within stations has enhanced cultural value and created new opportunities for public engagement and research.

What to see and visitor tips

Stations that display finds can be observed during metro operating hours: internal displays show stratigraphic sections and artefacts in their urban context. For guided tours or technical briefings, contact local museum services or municipal heritage authorities.

Practical information

  • Access: check operating hours and any temporary closures for works or upgrades;
  • Interchanges: Colosseum station connects with Line B;
  • Artefact protection: exposed finds have been stabilised and integrated into protected visitor routes;
  • Updates: network developments and station openings may change routes and points of interest; consult official metro information before visiting.

Line C exemplifies how contemporary infrastructure can coexist with archaeological conservation, providing public access to discoveries and strengthening urban mobility.
