The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome has added Dissociation, a fresco by Giorgio Celiberti executed between 1991 and 1994, to its permanent collection. The work was donated by the artist’s heirs and is on view within a temporary exhibition running from late March to early May 2026.
Dissociation is a large-scale fresco where an ancient technique meets a contemporary visual language of sparse signs and dense materiality. The light tonalities and graphic interventions on the surface articulate a dialogue between memory and the present, central to Celiberti’s practice.
Giorgio Celiberti (Udine, 1929) is a key figure in post-war Italian art. Trained at an art high school and having worked in Emilio Vedova’s studio, he exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1948 at just nineteen. Residencies in Paris, Brussels and London connected him with European avant-gardes; a 1965 visit to the Terezín camp profoundly affected his work. His practice spans painting, sculpture, printmaking and environmental interventions, and his works are held in major public and private collections.
Alongside Dissociation, the temporary show presents three additional works by Celiberti, tracing different phases of his research. The exhibition offers a concise overview of the artist’s persistent concerns and his ability to merge traditional techniques with contemporary expression.
