Dis/Enchanted Interiors: overview

Dis/Enchanted Interiors is the first solo exhibition in Italy by Ukrainian artist Anna Perach, presented at MAD Murate Art District in Florence. Curated by Veronica Caciolli and Valentina Gensini, the show explores folklore, mythology, colonial legacies, identity and feminine representation through textile installations and performative works.

Key works and themes

Perach constructs immersive environments populated by sculptures made with tufting, a technique commonly used for carpets. The domestic connotations of textile practice become a lens on cultural migration: wearable pieces that sit between object and “skin” and are often activated in sound-based performances.

  • Mother of Monsters: inspired by a nineteenth-century tale, the piece addresses bodily deformation, reproductive violence and transformation.
  • Alkonost: a reinterpretation of the Slavic bird-woman myth that shifts the figure from abandoned victim to a potent, dangerous presence.
  • Uncanny Valley: embroidered heads that recall a procession of severed heads, invoking cultural memory and the unsettling effect of near-human likenesses.
  • New works created for the MAD first-floor gallery and a site-specific commission for the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology that examines the artist’s family objects and migration histories.

Technique, performance and critical context

Using tufting and textile practices, Perach interrogates the divide between domestic familiarity and exoticization, foregrounding postcolonial critiques and gendered reception of traditions. Wearable sculptures presented in choreographed performances with sound amplify the intersection of art, anthropology and collective memory.
