Excavations restart at Area Olmo in Este

After fifty years, archaeological investigations have resumed at the All’Olmo site in Este. The project, promoted by the Municipality of Este together with the Department of Culture and Civilisation of the University of Verona and authorized by the Ministry of Culture, aims to document Roman structures and prepare the area for redevelopment as a public park.

Objectives of the campaign

The fieldwork focuses on clarifying the layout of the Decumanus and walls likely related to the ancient forum of Ateste. The excavation, coordinated by Prof. Patrizia Basso, applies stratigraphic methods to complement earlier investigations from the 1970s–80s and precedes the enhancement works planned for the site.

Excavation period and public open-days

Excavation period: from 2026-05-04 to 2026-05-29.

To involve the local community, archaeologists and students will open the site with free guided tours on two scheduled days:

  • Friday, May 22, 2026 – 1st slot: 16:30–17:15; 2nd slot: 17:30–18:15
  • Friday, May 29, 2026 – 1st slot: 16:30–17:15; 2nd slot: 17:30–18:15

The guided visits will showcase field progress and finds, with commentary on the historical context and excavation techniques.
