Diamante (CS): sea, murals, cedars and the village’s famous chilli

Autore: Redazione 26/03/2026 12:33

Why visit Diamante

Diamante, on the Riviera dei Cedri in Cosenza province, blends accessible beaches, a mural-covered historic center and a mountainous hinterland just minutes away by car. It works as both a seaside base and a starting point for hikes in the Pollino National Park.

The murals: an open-air museum

Since 1981 the old town’s facades have been painted with hundreds of murals. Today there are more than 150 artworks that tell local stories — migration, work, nature — and create an informal open-air museum integrated with everyday life.

Beaches: 8 km of varied coastline

Diamante's coastline stretches about 8 km and includes sandy beaches and small rocky coves. Main bathing spots:

  • Sabbia d’Oro: the largest sandy beach with shallow, clear water.
  • Spiaggia Piccola: a small pebble inlet tucked between rocks.
  • Spiaggia Grande: smoothed pebbles in front of Punta Cirella.
  • Caletta del Porto: a sheltered bay beneath the historic centre.
  • Cirella Beach: gateway to the tiny Isola di Cirella, reachable by boat or for strong swimmers.

Cirella: ruins and coastal history

The Cirella hamlet has ancient origins with Roman remains and castle ruins on a hill overlooking the sea. The nearby uninhabited Isola di Cirella features coves and caves ideal for snorkeling and short boat trips.

The Diamante cedar

The Riviera’s name comes from the local cedar variety cultivated on surrounding hills. Its intense aroma is used in candies, liqueurs and preserves. During early summer evenings the scent from the citrus groves can drift down to the sea — try local cedar products in town shops.

Chilli pepper: September festival

Diamante is also known for its chilli pepper. Every year in the second week of September the Chilli Festival animates the promenade with stalls, tastings, contests of heat and live events — a chance to sample regional specialties like ’nduja and chilli-flavored sweets and liqueurs.

Inland and the Pollino

Just a 10-minute drive leads to the Pollino National Park: forests, medieval hill towns such as Buonvicino and hiking routes that contrast sharply with the coastline. This makes Diamante a convenient place for combining sea and mountain activities.

Boat excursions and coastal highlights

Daily boat tours depart from the harbour to scenic spots: Isola di Cirella, the sea caves of Punta Cirella, the spectacular Arcomagno of San Nicola Arcella and Isola di Dino. Tours range from half-day to full-day and typically include opportunities for snorkeling.

How to get there and practical tips

  • By train: Diamante station is on the Tyrrhenian line with Intercity and regional services, within walking distance of the seafront.
  • By car: main access via the A2 motorway (Scalea or Praia a Mare exits depending on direction).
  • Best time to visit: September offers pleasant weather and the Chilli Festival; July–August is optimal for beachgoers but busier.
  • Must-dos: mural walk in the historic center, boat trip to Isola di Cirella and tasting local cedar and chilli products.

Diamante is a compact, genuine village where art, food and nature converge — ideal for travellers who want a mix of sea, culture and nearby mountain landscapes.
