Destination Lombards: the digital Grand Tour of UNESCO sites

Destination Lombards is a digital initiative that promotes Lombard heritage by connecting seven stages of the UNESCO serial site "The Lombards in Italy. Places of Power (568–774 AD)". The project uses social media formats and multimedia content to present monuments and historic complexes in a contemporary tone, with particular focus on the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel in Monte Sant'Angelo.

Included sites

  • Cividale del Friuli – Gastaldaga area and the Longobard Temple
  • Brescia – monastic complex of San Salvatore–Santa Giulia
  • Castelseprio – area of the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista
  • Campello sul Clitunno – Temple of the Clitunno
  • Spoleto – Basilica of San Salvatore
  • Benevento – complex of Santa Sofia
  • Monte Sant'Angelo – Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel

Creators and their role

Five content creators with backgrounds in history, art and popularization turn each stop into a "narrative station": reels, stories, photos and videos designed for a young, curious audience. Contributors provide accessible storytelling while keeping historical accuracy.

Why follow and practical tips for visiting

  • Stay informed: follow creators' reels and posts on major social platforms for up‑to‑date materials and preparatory content.
  • Plan visits: check opening hours and local events or religious celebrations that may affect access, particularly at the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel.
  • Family friendly: content is conceived as an engaging introduction, useful before an on-site visit.
  • Accessibility: verify paths, services and suggested visit durations for each site to organize your itinerary effectively.
  • Further study: use the digital resources as starting points for reading, guided tours or deeper archaeological study.

Project scope and aims

Funded as part of a measure for UNESCO sites, the initiative aims to attract diverse audiences—especially younger generations—through contemporary formats while ensuring scholarly quality and enhanced visitor experience. The digital materials also serve as practical preparation for on-site visits.
