Destination Lombards: a digital Grand Tour for UNESCO Sites

Destination Lombards is an outreach path that networks seven stops within the UNESCO serial site “The Lombards in Italy. The places of power (568–774 AD)”. The initiative uses digital storytelling to present historical monuments and complexes, highlighting the Sanctuary of Saint Michael in Monte Sant'Angelo.

Included sites

  • Cividale del Friuli – Gastaldaga area and Longobard Temple
  • Brescia – San Salvatore–Santa Giulia monastic complex
  • Castelseprio – area of the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista
  • Campello sul Clitunno – Temple of Clitunno
  • Spoleto – Basilica of San Salvatore
  • Benevento – Santa Sofia complex
  • Monte Sant'Angelo – Sanctuary of Saint Michael

Creators and their role

Five content creators with backgrounds in history, art and popularization turn each stop into a narrative station using reels, stories, photos and short videos aimed at younger audiences and culture enthusiasts. The contributors are:

  • Flavio Burni (Lo Storico) – Brescia
  • Daniela Tedone (La Storia per Ted) – Castelseprio
  • Erika Micheli (CadavErika Storica) – Campello sul Clitunno and Spoleto
  • Evelina Silvestroni – Benevento and Monte Sant'Angelo
  • Andrea Passador (Prolisso) – Cividale del Friuli

Why follow and practical tips

The main aim is to make Lombard heritage more accessible and engaging while preserving historical accuracy. The digital materials provide context and practical suggestions for visitors.

  • How to follow: look for reels, stories and posts by the creators on major social platforms for real-time updates and multimedia content.
  • Plan your visit: check opening times and any religious or cultural events that could affect access, especially at the Sanctuary of Saint Michael.
  • For families: the content is designed as an accessible introduction useful before an on-site visit.
  • Accessibility and timing: verify facilities, routes and suggested visit durations for each site to organize your trip effectively.
  • Further study: use the digital material as a starting point for guided tours and deeper historical research.

The initiative is supported by a measure dedicated to UNESCO Sites and aims to reach new audiences through contemporary formats while ensuring historical quality and enjoyable access.
