Reggio Calabria preserves a remarkable and layered urban archaeological heritage: the Archaeological Map records 74 areas and 203 sites excavated between the 16th and 21st centuries. Many finds are embedded in the modern city but remain largely invisible and hard to interpret for visitors.
Turning these places into a coherent cultural asset requires a comprehensive public strategy that networks the sites, connects them to the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia and provides a clear, accessible narrative. Notable contexts include the Greek Walls, the Roman Baths along the waterfront, the hypogeum at Piazza Italia, the Odeon in via XXIV Maggio and the Hellenistic tomb on via Tripepi.
Current challenges are site fragmentation, limited accessibility, the lack of a structured archaeological route and an absence of international promotion tied to the city's Magna Graecia identity. Addressing these gaps calls for coordinated actions and targeted investments.
An integrated plan would not only enhance the local past but also create jobs, identity and economic opportunities. With rising tourist flows, the strategic choice is evident: convert archaeological heritage into a systemic resource for Reggio today and in the future.
