Museo del Corso in Rome presents a major selection of works from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The exhibition examines the Habsburgs’ role as patrons and cultural agents, showing how art functioned as a tool of representation, knowledge and diplomatic exchange across a multiethnic empire.
Curated by Cäcilia Bischoff (KHM), the show focuses on European painting of the 16th and 17th centuries, juxtaposing Flemish masters—Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jan Brueghel the Elder—with Italian painters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Orazio Gentileschi, Guido Cagnacci and Giovanni Battista Moroni.
A highlight of the exhibition is Caravaggio’s The Crowning with Thorns (c. 1603–1605), an emblematic work that illustrates the baroque shift toward intense realism and emotional immediacy in religious imagery.
Beyond individual masterpieces, the display tells the story of a museum as a cultural project and of a dynastic collection that shaped artistic taste and transnational exchanges in early modern Europe.
