History and description
Considered one of the most important historic buildings in Gubbio, the Ducal Palace—also known as Corte Nuova—is a Renaissance‑style structure built in 1470 by order of Federico da Montefeltro on the remains of medieval ruins. Designed by architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, it is the only example of Renaissance architecture in the city. The palace consists of two main wings and features a central courtyard in brick and stone, windows divided by pilasters, and numerous decorative elements such as 17th‑century wooden cabinets and door panels adorned with the Montefeltro family coat of arms. Inside, visitors can admire grand halls such as Battista Sforza’s bath, distinguished by fireplaces, and the studiolo, similar to the one in the Ducal Palace of Urbino. Today, managed by the Polo Museale dell’Umbria, it serves as an important cultural hub, hosting events, exhibitions, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s artistic heritage.
Curiosities
Regarded as a hidden treasure of Gubbio, one of its most remarkable features—the studiolo—was sold in 1874 and later acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A faithful replica, installed in 2009, now allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of such a space.
Access
Generally open during cultural events, from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm, the palace can be visited at the cost of €5, with free admission and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located in the historic center of Gubbio, the building is easily reachable on foot either from Fossato di Vico station or directly from the city center.
Considered a hidden gem of the city, the Corte Nuova is an unmissable stop for lovers of architecture and Renaissance history.
