Corfinio requests classification as a national archaeological site

The Municipality of Corfinio, in the province of L'Aquila, has officially asked the Ministry of Culture to recognize the area as a national archaeological site. The proposal aims to transfer management to the State to ensure stronger protection and to boost cultural and tourism promotion.

In the letter sent by Mayor Francesco Di Nisio, the municipality highlights the historical relevance of the area: Corfinio served as the capital of the Italic League during the Social War (91–88 BC) and is considered a symbolic site of early Italian identity.

Key finds and sites mentioned in the request include:

  • Domus of the Mosaics
  • Archaeological Park of the Sacred Area
  • Shrine of Fonte Sant'Ippolito
  • Civic Archaeological Museum
  • Lapidarium

The small municipality, with about 940 residents, reports challenges in maintaining and managing a heritage site of national significance on its own. The administrative model used in Pietrabbondante is cited as a reference for potential state-led management.

Next steps will involve a technical assessment by the Ministry of Culture to determine site suitability and to outline any state management measures. If approved, state oversight could enable structural conservation projects, protection measures and initiatives to enhance cultural tourism.
