Corfinio starts UNESCO nomination for the memory of the Italic Civilization

The Municipality of Corfinio has officially initiated the institutional process to nominate the historical memory of the Italic Civilization and the Italic League as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The initiative highlights Corfinium’s historical role as the place where the name ITALY was first used to indicate a political community.

Under the project named Ove Italia Nacque, the plan aims to connect archaeological sites, historical evidence and cultural practices related to the Italic Confederation, enhancing their role in the formation of Italian and European historical identity.

Main objectives

• Support historical and archaeological research on Italic communities and the Italic League.
• Promote cultural dissemination and educational activities about Italy's institutional origins.
• Strengthen cooperation among territories historically linked to the Italic Civilization.
• Create a national network of significant sites and involved institutions.
• Pass on values of participation, inclusion and representation to future generations.

Stakeholders and next steps

The municipal administration has begun the documentation phase by submitting applications to national bodies and plans to progressively involve universities, heritage authorities, research institutes, cultural associations and public and private institutions. The nomination will be supported by scientific and archaeological documentation and by the endorsements of participating entities.

This initiative aims not only at gaining UNESCO recognition, but also at fostering educational programs, cultural events and sustainable tourism strategies to enhance the local area.

Expected impact: increased historical knowledge, boosted research and conservation activities, stronger institutional cooperation and promotion of the intangible heritage linked to the emergence of the political identity called "Italy".
