Colosseum: new public spaces by Stefano Boeri Interiors

The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo has completed a new phase of enhancement: the southern ambulacra of the Flavian Amphitheatre are now open to the public after a design intervention by Stefano Boeri Interiors. The project combines conservation, historical interpretation and improved visitor access, revealing parts of the monument previously less accessible.

The intervention focuses on making the visitor route more intuitive, providing rest and orientation points, and highlighting archaeological elements that are not easily perceived from traditional paths. The design choices aim to be discreet and reversible, respecting the site's historical value.

What changes for visitors

  • Newly accessible areas: the southern ambulacra expand the spatial understanding of the amphitheatre.
  • Improved routes: clearer signage and itineraries to guide the visit more effectively.
  • Rest and interpretation spots: areas equipped for reading panels and short breaks during the tour.
  • Conservation measures: interventions designed to protect the archaeological fabric using reversible solutions.

Practical information for your visit

To plan a visit to the Colosseum and the newly opened spaces, consider the following tips:

  • Buy tickets online in advance to avoid queues and secure the entry time you prefer.
  • Check whether combined tickets include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill to make the most of your visit.
  • Use public transport: the Colosseo metro stop is the most convenient; there are also buses and pedestrian routes from the historic centre.
  • Prefer early morning or late afternoon slots to avoid peak crowds and to enjoy better lighting on the ruins.

This enhancement at the Colosseum shows how contemporary design can support archaeological sites by improving accessibility and interpretation while safeguarding the monument's historical integrity.
