History and description
Probably dating back to the period between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, the sixteen Corinthian columns of San Lorenzo—believed by some to have belonged to a pagan temple or a civic building and each about 7 meters tall—were only placed in their current position in the 4th century, becoming, with their distinctive marble, an integral part of the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
Curiosities
Miraculously surviving numerous demolition attempts, the columns became a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages for their presumed religious value. Today, they serve as a popular meeting point for Milan’s nightlife.
Access
As an open-air monument, the columns can be visited free of charge at any time. They are often surrounded by events, markets, or street performances.
How to reach them
Located in the center of Milan, the columns can be reached by metro (lines M2 and M3), tram (lines 2, 3, and 14), and several bus routes.
Considered one of Milan’s most fascinating monuments, the Columns of San Lorenzo represent a meeting point between the city’s ancient history and the vibrant, dynamic life of today. An unmissable stop for those who want to fully experience Milan and its lively evenings!
