History and description
Built toward the end of the 16th century by order of Vincenzo I Gonzaga, the citadel—designed with a hexagonal plan and featuring a powder magazine and the Citadel Park—was conceived as a stronghold to defend Casale from foreign sieges. It maintained its strategic role until the 1800s, when it was incorporated into the new Savoy system and later partially demolished, before being redeveloped as a public urban park.
Curiosities
The citadel is remembered as the site of the execution of the Banda Tom during World War II. It also appears in literature, being mentioned in Manzoni’s The Betrothed and Umberto Eco’s The Island of the Day Before.
Access
The area is freely accessible, with entry regulated according to visitor numbers. It can be used both for guided tours and for private events.
How to reach it
The site can be reached by car via the A33 or A26 motorways, by train toward Casale Monferrato, or through the IAT tourist service.
A perfect destination for history lovers, the Citadel of Casale Monferrato combines memory and beauty, allowing visitors to experience one of the most remarkable modern monuments—often brought to life through reenactments and cultural events.
