From 8 to 10 May 2026 the 32nd edition of Chiese Aperte returns. Promoted by Archeoclub d'Italia, the initiative invites residents and visitors to explore lesser-known places of worship notable for their historical and artistic value. This year's edition commemorates the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi and aims to showcase Franciscan heritage nationwide.
The event includes 44 locations—churches, convents, hermitages and sanctuaries—with special attention to sites damaged by earthquakes, offering openings and guided visits to recently restored complexes.
In the Abruzzo region the programme is distributed across several towns: in L'Aquila activities on 10 May include visits to the church of San Nicola di Bari in Prata d'Ansidonia, the church of San Paolo near the ancient walls of Peltuinum and the Convent of the Friars Minor of San Giuliano. Other Abruzzo sites taking part include the church of Saints Francesco and Nicola Greco in Guardiagrele, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Propezzano in Morro d'Oro, the church of Santa Maria del Lago in Moscufo and the Convent of San Panfilo fuori le mura in Spoltore.
Practical tips: check local schedules and access rules published by organisers or regional partners before planning your visit. These openings are valuable opportunities to see artworks, architecture and local history that are not always accessible.
