The Cathedral of Christ the King is the most important Catholic place of worship in La Spezia and serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato.
Dedicated to Christ the King, the church was built between 1956 and 1975 based on a design by architect Adalberto Libera, one of the leading figures of Italian Rationalism. Consecrated in 1975, the building is a significant example of modern sacred architecture and represents the spiritual center of the La Spezia community. Conceived as the new cathedral of the diocese following the birth of the modern city, it quickly became a symbol of the local community, embodying the desire for renewal and affirmation of faith in a contemporary era.
Cathedral of Christ the King: art, faith, and architecture
The exterior of the imposing building is strongly characterized by its circular layout and cylindrical structure, crowned by a band of windows that filter natural light into the interior, creating a mystical and luminous atmosphere. The large forecourt, which opens onto the square below, enhances the sense of monumentality and gives the cathedral a central role in city life, connecting via a series of steps to Piazza Europa, which it dominates with its grandeur.
The interior, based on a central plan, can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers. The space is dominated by the majestic dome, 37 meters high, supported by 12 pillars representing the Apostles. Natural light filters through 24 vertical windows symbolizing the 24 hours of the day dedicated to divine praise. The white and gray marble flooring, gently sloping, converges toward the central white marble altar, while the presbytery, paved in red marble, is slightly elevated.
The main altar, in white marble, is positioned at the center of the church, emphasizing communal participation in the liturgy. Above the altar hangs the large bronze crucifix by Marcello Tommasi. The cathedral also houses important contemporary artworks: the ceramic Via Crucis by Lucio Fontana, the apse mosaic by Gino Severini, and the stained glass windows by Giovanni Hajnal depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary.
