History and description
Built between 1354 and 1356 by order of Cangrande II della Scala, the castle was conceived from the start as a military fortress, complete with the Scaliger Bridge, designed as an escape route in case of necessity. Later, it was used by various noble families as a barracks, military academy, or armory. During the Napoleonic era, modifications were made, and only in the early 20th century was it restored and transformed into a true museum. Today, visitors can explore around thirty rooms housing works from different periods, as well as a Roman domus with a mosaic uncovered during recent excavations. Outside, notable features include the Mastio Tower, the courtyard with a dog-shaped fountain (symbol of the Scaliger family), and the iconic bridge.
Curiosities
The castle has been the stage for several events, including a major theft in 2015 of prestigious artworks, later recovered. Moreover, many of its construction materials were reused to build the famous balcony of Juliet’s House, now one of Verona’s most visited landmarks thanks to Shakespeare’s timeless play.
Access
The castle is open daily until 7:30 pm and can be visited at an approximate cost of €6, with free entry and specific reductions available. Guided tours are offered at higher prices.
How to reach it
Located near the city center, the castle can be reached on foot, by bus (line 173), or by car via the A4 or A22 motorways.
A monument that blends medieval military power with art and legend, Castelvecchio is one of Verona’s most fascinating sites, offering history, culture, and breathtaking views.
