History and description
Built during the Norman period on the remains of a tower, the castle takes its name from Frederick II of Swabia, who in the 1240s transformed it into a stronghold ready to withstand possible assaults. It was equipped with corridors for archers, artillery embrasures, and charcoal graffiti probably left by prisoners. Later, after being restored by the Aragonese following an earthquake, it was used as a prison until 1885, when it was declared a national monument. In recent years, it has also become home to the Museum of the Sea.
