History and description
Originally built in 1141 by Roger II of Normandy, the castle was destroyed during a revolt and later rebuilt in the 1230s–1240s by Frederick II of Swabia, who turned it into an important fortress. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous transformations that expanded it and also made it the noble residence of Isabella of Aragon and Bona Sforza. Before becoming a monument open to the public, it was used as a barracks and prison, until it was restored and reopened. With a trapezoidal plan and surrounded by a moat, the castle features four corner towers, a portal bearing the coat of arms of Frederick II, and several vaulted halls, one of which houses the Gipsoteca, rich in Romanesque and medieval masterpieces.
Curiosities
In addition to its historical value, the castle is also wrapped in legend. It is said that Frederick II once sent a courtesan to Francis of Assisi inside the castle, only to be astonished by the saint’s incorruptible integrity.
Access
Open from Monday to Saturday, the castle can be visited at the cost of €6, with reductions and specific free entry days available.
How to reach it
