History and description
Located in the province of L’Aquila, the Piccolomini Castle was built around 1460 by Antonio Todeschini Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II and son‑in‑law of Ferdinand I of Naples, on the site of an ancient military structure belonging to the Counts of Marsi. The building is characterized by an irregular pentagonal plan, crowned by circular corner towers and an external stone structure, with an appearance that oscillates between medieval and Renaissance styles.
Accessible on foot through a front park, the interior is arranged around an “L”‑shaped courtyard with a central well, surrounded by arcades, mullioned and triple‑light windows, and several rooms that preserve decorations such as frescoes, noble coats of arms, and Renaissance details. The castle also features the Piccolomini Chapel, with a single nave in 15th‑century style, decorated with geometric figures in shades of blue and yellow depicting crosses of Christ, and an apse with an altar and round‑arched windows.
After the 1915 earthquake, the castle was restored in the 1930s, while still preserving many original elements from its construction period. Over the centuries, ownership passed through various families until the Fiastri‑Zannelli family, who, starting in 1929, took care of its maintenance and current use, transforming it into a hotel‑restaurant.
Curiosities
Declared a national monument in 1902, the castle was chosen as the location for numerous Italian films, especially during the 1960s and 1970s.
Access
As it is private property, visits and stays in the hotel area require prior reservation.
How to reach it
Located in Balsorano Vecchio, on a hill of Monte Cornacchia, the castle can be reached by car up to the new town of Balsorano and then by continuing uphill to the old part, or on foot along a short hilly path leading to the park.
The Piccolomini Castle of Balsorano is a place that combines historical beauty, military architecture, and aristocratic charm.
