History and description
Built in the 13th century, the castle initially served as a military fortress thanks to its strategic position. Only in the 16th century was it transformed into a noble residence by Enrico Pandone, Count of Venafro and passionate horse breeder, from whom it takes its name. He enriched it with numerous frescoes and decorations. Abandoned for a time and later restored in the 20th century, the castle has a quadrangular layout with crenellated walls, frescoed halls decorated with life‑sized horses, and several rooms that now host works of art preserved in the National Museum. From its terraces, visitors can also enjoy a panoramic view over the valley and the historic center.
Curiosities
In addition to being used as a set for documentaries and short films, the castle is especially famous for its frescoed horses—the only ones in the world painted at life size.
