Castello Pallavicino Serbelloni – from military building to noble residence

Autore: Redazione 03/10/2025 09:34

History and description

Located in Castiglione d’Adda, the Castello Pallavicino Serbelloni traces its origins back to the 11th century, when it was under the control of the monastery of San Vito di Camairago. In the following centuries, its strategic position made it the subject of disputes between the Bishop of Lodi and the Visconti, until it was first taken by Carlo Fieschi and, shortly after, around 1500, by the Pallavicino family. The following year, Girolamo Pallavicino decided to transform the castle into his noble residence, initiating works later continued by the Serbelloni family, who gave it its current appearance.

The building has a rectangular plan with an internal courtyard and is characterized by four corner towers of different shapes facing the Adda River. On the south‑western side, there is a Mannerist façade with rusticated stonework, stone decorations depicting mythical figures and grotesques, as well as a portico with paired columns and round arches. Despite many modifications over time, at least one hall with a frescoed vaulted ceiling from the second half of the 16th century has been preserved.

Curiosities

Until 1470, the castle was surrounded by defensive walls, which were demolished by order of Galeazzo Maria Sforza during the disputes between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice.

Access

There are no certain indications regarding costs, scheduled guided tours, or public visits in its current state. Since the castle is used as a residence, visits are likely possible only on special occasions and by reservation.

How to reach it

Located within the town center, the castle is easily reachable on foot.

The Castello Pallavicino Serbelloni is a living monument that bears witness to centuries of Lodigiano history, between arms, affections, power, and art.
