History and description
Built starting in the 14th century with the construction of the Mastia Tower by the Angevins, the castle was later expanded in 1480 by Ferdinand I of Aragon. It took its current name because, in 1815, it was the site of the execution of Joachim Murat. The quadrangular structure features two cylindrical towers and a commemorative plaque at the entrance. Inside, visitors can explore the Murat Museum, which includes, for example, a marble bust of the king, as well as panoramic terraces offering breathtaking views of the city.
Curiosities
Although expanded by several rulers, the castle always served exclusively as a fortress. Today, its prisons are also open to visitors.
Access
Open from March to December, with varying hours depending on the season, the fortress can be visited at the cost of €5, with free entry and specific reductions available.
How to reach it
Located in Pizzo Calabro, the building can be reached by car via the A2 motorway or by train to Vibo Valentia–Pizzo.
Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the sea, Murat Castle is one of the most fascinating monuments in Calabria.
