History and description
Located on Sant’Antonio Hill and overlooking the city from above, Monforte Castle was first mentioned in a parchment from 1375, which highlights its Norman or Lombard origins. Its name, however, derives from Count Nicola II Monforte, who restored it after the earthquake of the mid-15th century. After a long period of abandonment throughout the 18th century, it was purchased by the municipality in the following century and transformed into a war memorial in the early 20th century. The quadrangular structure is characterized by four external towers and one internal tower that still houses the military weather station, a drawbridge with the family coat of arms at its entrance, a panoramic terrace, and underground chambers that today contain water reserves.
Curiosities
Also celebrated in numismatics, the castle and its underground passages are surrounded by legends. It is believed that these passages once served as escape routes, though they are now sealed.
Access
Open from Tuesday to Sunday in two different time slots, the fortress can be visited free of charge.
How to reach it
The site can be reached by public transport, such as urban or extra-urban buses and trains from Campobasso station, by car via the ring road leading to Viale della Rimembranza, or on foot through the historic center up to the same avenue.
Considered one of the most important symbols of Molise, Monforte Castle stands as a testament to six centuries of history, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the past.
