Palazzo dei Diamanti – one of the most fascinating monuments of Ferrara

Autore: Redazione 30/09/2025 20:49

History and description

Built at the end of the 15th century by order of Sigismondo d’Este, the Palazzo dei Diamanti is one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. Designed by Biagio Rossetti, the famous architect of the Este court, the building owes its name to the unique decoration of its façade: more than 8,500 blocks of white and pink marble carved into diamond‑shaped pyramids. This extraordinary workmanship creates unique plays of light that change throughout the day. Part of the Addizione Erculea project, which expanded the city in the 15th century and made Ferrara one of the first “modern cities” of Europe, the palace today houses the National Art Gallery of Ferrara and regularly hosts major art exhibitions.

Curiosities

According to a local legend, one of the diamond‑shaped blocks on the façade conceals a real precious stone, placed there by the Duke as a symbol of the wealth and power of the Este family. However, no one has ever discovered which one it might be. The palace is also renowned for the optical effect created by its sculpted blocks: when observed in full light, they seem to move, producing a three‑dimensional illusion that continues to amaze visitors and art lovers.

Access

The palace’s inner courtyard is freely accessible, while entry to the National Gallery and temporary exhibitions requires a ticket, with prices varying depending on the event.

How to reach it

The Palazzo dei Diamanti is located on Corso Ercole I d’Este, one of Ferrara’s most elegant streets. It is easily reachable on foot from the historic center and is also served by several urban bus lines.

Considered one of Ferrara’s most fascinating monuments, the Palazzo dei Diamanti combines architectural elegance with cultural richness, making it an essential stop for anyone wishing to discover the history and art of one of Italy’s most refined cities.
