History and description
Built in 1073 as a defensive fortress by order of Robert II Guiscard, the castle gradually evolved over time. After transformations during the Angevin and Aragonese periods, it became a noble residence for the San Severino, Salluzzo, and Compagna families, who expanded and modified it further, until it was declared a National Monument in 1927. The structure has a quadrangular layout with four corner towers and a decorated central keep, from which visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view. Inside, there is a mezzanine floor that once housed the “Monk’s Prison,” a noble floor with the Hall of Mirrors, and several intimate rooms such as the Venus Room and the Baron’s chambers.
Curiosities
The castle is tied to a series of fascinating legends, particularly that of Duke Salluzzo, who was said to grant pardons to prisoners only on August 28, in honor of Saint Augustine.
