History and description
First mentioned in a document from 1158, Villalta Castle endured several sieges and reconstructions until its expansion in the 1500s, when a Renaissance wing with large halls was added. After hosting Count Lucio della Torre in the 18th century and being occupied by Napoleonic and later Austro‑Hungarian troops, the site was recognized as a National Monument in 1974. From 2000 onwards, it has been restored and maintained by the Counts Gelmi di Caporiacco, who still own it today. Restored to its former splendor, the castle preserves its medieval layout, including a tower, a drawbridge, frescoed interior rooms, and a surrounding park rich in flora.
Curiosities
The castle is mainly linked to the legend of Ginevra of Strassoldo, who, according to tradition, was turned into a marble statue out of jealousy. It is said that her weeping can still be heard on nights of the full moon.
Access
As a private residence, the castle can only be visited by reservation or during the “Castelli Aperti” events. It also serves as a venue for exclusive occasions such as weddings, exhibitions, and conferences.
How to reach it
Located on a ridge overlooking the Friulian plain, the castle can be reached by car via the A23 motorway toward Udine, or by train from Udine station.
A place of history, legend, architecture, and nature, Villalta Castle offers a unique experience in an unforgettable romantic atmosphere.
