History and description
A fortress whose existence was first documented in 983 through a donation made by Emperor Otto, the castle stands on a hill probably dating back to the Bronze Age. After the earthquake of 1511, it underwent a major restoration that transformed it into a Renaissance palace with a rectangular layout and views over the surrounding landscape. Today, it is part of the Civic Museums of Udine, as it houses the Castle Museum inside.
Curiosities
In addition to being considered the site of one of the first European parliamentary assemblies and often serving as a panoramic point used for various film shoots, the castle is surrounded by a legend concerning Attila, who is said to have ordered the Huns to build it with earth in order to set fire to Aquileia.
Access
Open from Monday to Sunday, with variations usually reported on the website of the Municipality of Udine, the castle can be visited at a cost ranging from €5 to €8, with free and reduced admissions available.
How to reach it
Although the walk is recommended, given the castle’s location in the very heart of the historic center, the monument can also be reached by car, with parking available, and by train, about 15 minutes from the center.
Wrapped in legend and beauty, the Castle of Udine is one of the main stops for those who want to fully explore Friuli Venezia Giulia and enjoy all its wonders!
