History and description
A medieval building set in the landscape of the lower valley, Sarre Castle was first documented in the 13th century. Over the centuries, it passed through the hands of various owners but belonged mainly to the House of Savoy, who held it until 1972. It was then turned into a public museum, managed and restored by the region. Characterized by a large central square tower—the only surviving element of the original structure—the castle features numerous rooms and halls, trophy and memorabilia galleries, and a chapel dedicated to several saints.
Curiosities
The castle is closely tied to royal hunting traditions. King Umberto I introduced the decorative use of ibex and chamois horns, hunted exclusively by the Savoy family. Although controversial, this practice paradoxically contributed to saving the ibex from extinction.
Access
Open daily, the castle can be visited at the cost of €8, with specific reductions available. Pets are allowed, and parking is available nearby.
How to reach it
The monument can be reached by car via the A5 motorway, or by bus with stops at Lalex.
