History and description
Built between the 14th and 15th centuries by order of the local lord Niccolò Fieschi, the castle was positioned on the hill called Poggio to rise above the city below and emphasize the lord’s dominance. It is characterized by Ghibelline battlemented walls, watchtowers, and inner courtyards. Today, it houses the Ubaldo Formentini Civic Archaeological Museum, which preserves artifacts ranging from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.
Curiosities
The castle faced several threats of demolition over the centuries, but thanks to the intervention of the cultural heritage office, it now stands—together with the museum—as one of the most visited sites in the area.
Access
Open from Wednesday to Sunday with morning and afternoon visiting hours, the castle can be visited at the cost of €5.50. Guided tours have a higher fee, while reductions and recommended reservations are available.
How to reach it
Located just a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Ginocchio, the castle can also be reached by car or via the inclined elevator.
A true testament to the influence exercised by local rulers, the Castle of San Giorgio is an unmissable monument for those visiting Liguria, a fundamental stop on any itinerary through La Spezia!
