History and description
Built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the remains of a Nuragic settlement, the castle was first mentioned in a 1309 document by James II of Aragon. Initially a strategic stronghold, it later became a royal residence for the Arborense family before passing into the hands of the Counts of Quirra. After a long period of decline, it was restored between 1987 and 2011. The complex features a quadrangular keep, a defensive wall with eight towers, and two entrance gates leading to a medieval village.
Curiosities
The manor is tied to the legend of the “musca macedda”, a deadly wasp said to guard a hidden treasure buried beneath the castle.
Access
Not yet restored internally, the castle is accessible free of charge but only from the outside.
How to reach it
Located in a particularly rugged area, the castle can be reached by car along the SS131 road towards Sardara and then Antiche Terme.
A medieval stronghold full of charm, Monreale Castle is the perfect stop for those who want to immerse themselves in the history of this fascinating place.
