The majestic Moncalieri Castle, perched on a hill just outside Turin, is one of the oldest Savoy Royal Residences, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 12th century by Thomas I of Savoy as a defensive fortress, it was transformed over the centuries into a sumptuous Baroque royal residence, a symbol of power and refinement.
Over time, the castle welcomed princes, duchesses, and sovereigns, becoming a central site in the history of Piedmont and Italy. It was here, in 1849, that Victor Emmanuel II signed the famous Proclamation of Moncalieri, a pivotal document in the political landscape of the Italian Risorgimento.
The imposing and well-preserved structure is built around a large inner courtyard and features elegant corner towers. The Royal Apartments offer a journey into Savoy splendor, with frescoed halls, original furnishings, and the evocative Royal Chapel. The rooms of Princesses Maria Letizia and Maria Clotilde, along with Victor Emmanuel II’s Apartment, are true gems of art and architecture.
Since 1948, part of the complex has housed the First “Piemonte” Regiment of the Carabinieri, making the castle a rare example of a historic building still in active use.
Moncalieri Castle is surrounded by numerous legends that enhance its mysterious charm. The most famous is that of Bela Rosin, or Rosa Vercellana, beloved of Victor Emmanuel II: her spirit is said to still wander through the castle’s halls and gardens. Other tales speak of walled-up friars, ghostly children, and lovelorn knights, whose souls still inhabit the silent nights within the ancient walls.
As of April 12, 2025, the magnificent King’s Wood is open to the public—a seven-hectare monumental park offering breathtaking panoramic views of Turin. It’s an ideal spot for walks, relaxation, and photography, accessible free of charge on weekends.
During the Christmas season, the castle lights up with light shows and scenic installations, transforming into an enchanted village that draws visitors from across Italy.
The Royal Apartments of Moncalieri Castle are open to visitors on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM). Guided tours, lasting about 60 minutes, depart every hour and are managed by the Consortium of Savoy Royal Residences.
