History and description
Dating back to the 13th century as a property of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, Manta Castle, located on a hill in the Varaita Valley, is a medieval building with a rectangular structure and a small tower. In the 15th century, it was transformed into a noble residence enriched with frescoes—such as those by the Master of Manta—and Renaissance-style decorations. After passing through the hands of several noble families, in 1984 it became the property of FAI (Italian National Trust), which opened it to the public.
Curiosities
One of the most unusual features of the castle is found in its kitchen: an ancient sloping floor drainage system designed to make cleaning easier and faster.
Access
Open from Wednesday to Sunday and visitable by reservation, the castle can be accessed at the price of €11 or €15, depending on whether a guided tour is included, with specific reductions available.
How to reach it
The monument can be reached by car via the A6 motorway toward Fossano, by train to Servigliano, or by bus on lines 095, 115, and 139 to Manta.
