Castle of Lecce – between history and legend

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 07:52

History and description

Built in the 12th century on a previous Norman fortification, the Castle of Lecce, also known as Castello Carlo V, was radically transformed between 1539 and 1549 at the will of the emperor. The renovation project, entrusted to the military architect Giangiacomo dell’Acaya, incorporated the pre‑existing medieval towers, including the Torre Mozza and the Torre Magistra, into an imposing bastioned structure, typical of Renaissance military architecture. The building has a quadrangular plan, reinforced by four massive corner bastions (San Martino, Santa Trinità, San Giacomo, and Santa Croce), and was originally surrounded by a moat. Inside, visitors can find large courtyards, vaulted rooms, a chapel, and numerous underground corridors, some of which were historically used as prisons. Over the centuries, the castle served various roles: fortress, residence, barracks, and even military district until 1979. Today, after significant restorations, it hosts cultural events and museum spaces.

Curiosities

According to popular legend, a live bear was once kept in the castle’s moat as a symbol of strength and intimidation during the time of the noble Orsini Del Balzo family. Another story tells of the fate of architect Giangiacomo dell’Acaya, who, after falling into disgrace, was imprisoned and died in the very castle he had designed. Today, some visitors claim to sense his presence in the underground passages.

Access

Open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, except on Mondays, the castle can be visited with an admission ticket of €8, with specific reductions and free entry available.

How to reach it

Located in the historic center of Lecce, just a few steps from Piazza Sant’Oronzo, the castle is easily reachable on foot, by bicycle, or by public transport.

Between military architecture, legends, and art, the Castello Carlo V of Lecce is an unmissable stop for anyone visiting the heart of Salento.
