History and description
Located in ancient Guglionesi, once the site of Usconium and later dominated by Romans, Lombards, and Normans, the castle was built around the 11th century on the highest part of the hill, giving it a strategic role in controlling the valley. Belonging to various populations over time, the Normans—particularly Robert Guiscard—strengthened its fortifications by building defensive walls, watchtowers, and gates. Today, these remain only in fragments, as the castle suffered damage from repeated invasions and was never restored due to its location on private land.
Curiosities
Part of a typically medieval village, the castle—also known as Castello da Capo—was not the only fortress in the area. According to documents and oral tradition, it was once accompanied by the so‑called Castello da Piedi, which has now completely disappeared.
Access
As it stands on private property, the ruins of the castle have no signage or entrance fees, but they can be freely visited while strolling through the village.
How to reach it
The fortress, or rather its remains, can be reached by car via the A14 motorway towards Termoli, or by train and bus, also heading to Termoli.
A panoramic viewpoint par excellence for enjoying the Molise landscape, the Castle of Guglionesi is an unmissable stop for those wishing to immerse themselves in a medieval village framed by breathtaking views.
