History and description
A noble residence and a unique medieval heritage, Fénis Castle was first mentioned in a document from 1242, when it belonged to the Challant family, who made it their seigniorial residence. Restored at the end of the 19th century, the manor—later acquired by the Aosta Valley—is set on a low hill surrounded by meadows. It is characterized by a pentagonal plan with a quadrangular courtyard, wooden balconies, halls, and rooms decorated with numerous frescoes.
Curiosities
The castle, marked by the recurrence of certain numbers with almost symbolic meaning, is tied to the legend of a young ghost, said to wander its halls after being killed by his stepmother to secure the inheritance for her own son. The castle has also served as a film set, notably for Fracchia contro Dracula (1985) and the miniseries La Freccia Nera (2006).
Access
Open daily, the castle can be visited at the cost of €9, with specific reductions available. Guided tours of about 30 minutes are offered and must be booked in advance.
How to reach it
The site can be reached by car via the Nus exit of the motorway, or by bus on line 464.
Offering a vivid glimpse into noble life of the past, Fénis Castle combines history, art, and timeless natural surroundings.
