History and description
Erected in 1389 by Ugone of Duino, the castle—featuring also a 16th‑century tower within a Baroque courtyard—later passed into the hands of the Walsee family and subsequently to Frederick III of Habsburg. Eventually, under the ownership of the Thurn und Taxis family, it became partially open to the public starting in 2003. Inside, the castle houses 18 richly decorated rooms connected by a Palladian‑style spiral staircase, while outside lies a terraced park with 21,000 seasonal flowers and an underground bunker dating back to World War II.
Curiosities
The castle is tied to the legend of the White Lady, said to have been turned to stone before the sea. It was also the residence of poet Rainer Maria Rilke, from whom the adjacent panoramic trail takes its name.
Access
Although still the residence of the Thurn und Taxis family, the castle is partially open to visitors from March to October, with varying hours. Admission costs €10, with the option to include Castel Vecchio for an additional €5. Free and reduced tickets are available, as well as guided tours.
How to reach it
Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, the castle can be reached by car via the A4 motorway toward Duino, by bus (lines 51 or 44, about 30 minutes from the site), or on foot along the designated trail.
A true testimony to the residential life of noble families, Duino Castle combines history, nature, art, and legend, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
