Cly Castle – one of the oldest in the Aosta Valley

Autore: Redazione 25/09/2025 09:34

History and description

Considered among the oldest castles in the Aosta Valley, Cly Castle was probably built around 1027. Its first mention appears in a papal bull of 1207 referring to the castle chapel. The structure is characterized by a primitive layout with a massive central donjon, surrounding walls, and a central tower. Inside, it preserves a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Maurice with frescoes, kitchens, stables, and the castellan’s residence. Belonging for many years to the Challant family, it later passed to the House of Savoy. From this period, numerous records remain, such as well‑preserved accounts of ordinary expenses. After a long abandonment, during which it was even used as a source of building materials for the Roncas residence, the castle fell into decay before being acquired by the municipality of Saint‑Denis in the early 20th century.

Curiosities

According to legend, the castle was the prison of Johanneta Cauda, accused of witchcraft, who spent about seventy days there before being condemned to death at the stake. The building is also known for being aligned with the castles of Montjovet and Ussel, as all three were strategically placed on the highest points of the Ayas Valley.

Access

Open only by appointment during the winter and with two daily visiting shifts in the summer, the site can be visited at the cost of €2, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the hamlet of Cly, from which it takes its name, the castle is best reached by car via State Road 26 towards Aosta and then Saint‑Denis, following the signs for Cly. Alternatively, it can be reached on foot with a one‑hour walk starting from the cemetery of Chambave.

A true testimony to the power of different noble families, Cly Castle is an unmissable destination for history lovers.
