Brunico Castle – the fortress overlooking the Puster Valley

Autore: Redazione 21/08/2025 10:16

History and description

Built in the 1250s by order of the Prince-Bishop of Brixen to protect the diocese’s assets, the castle—named after its founder—soon saw the town grow around it and became the setting of important events, such as the signing of the treaty between Nicholas of Cusa and Sigismund of Austria in 1460, the arrival of Charles V in 1552, and that of Maria Theresa of Austria in the 18th century. Briefly used for military purposes before returning to episcopal ownership, the castle underwent several transformations in the 19th century until it was fully integrated into the city of Brunico, over which it still towers. Its features include a southern gate, a central courtyard, a circular tower, richly decorated rooms, and a neo-Gothic chapel from 1900 adorned with coats of arms.

Curiosities

The castle is the only building in South Tyrol never to have been conquered. In the 1970s, it became the subject of controversy when it hosted a music festival reminiscent of “Woodstock,” which attracted many visitors but also sparked heated debate.

Access

Also home to the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa, the castle is open from May to November (closed on Tuesdays) and can be visited at the cost of €14, with specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Perched in an elevated position above the city, the castle can be reached by car via the A22 motorway toward Brunico, by train or bus from the central station, or on foot with a 20‑minute walk from the town center.

A true symbol of Trentino’s medieval history, Brunico Castle offers an experience that blends history, architecture, culture, and nature—perfect for those seeking a profound and unforgettable journey.
