History and description
Dating back to the 13th century, as attested by a papal bull from 1207, Aymavilles Castle was originally a fortified tower with surrounding walls. From the second half of the 14th century, the Challant family expanded it into a noble residence, gradually enriching it with monumental staircases, Baroque loggias, decorations, and frescoes. Later transformed into a museum and surrounded by vineyards, the castle has a quadrangular plan with four cylindrical towers, inside which three levels are arranged according to the exhibitions.
Curiosities
The castle is the only one in the Aosta Valley with cylindrical towers. It is also tied to the legend of the ghost of the knight Challant who, after dying in battle, is said to haunt the halls—rich in symbolic frescoes—in search of his white horse.
Access
Open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, the castle can be visited at the cost of €9, with free entry and specific reductions available. Guided tours are also offered.
How to reach it
Located in an area renowned for wine production, the castle can be reached by car via State Road 25 or the A5 motorway toward Aosta, by bus from the town center, or on foot with a hike of about two hours.
A perfect fusion of Medieval and Baroque styles, Aymavilles Castle is an unmissable stop on any Aosta Valley itinerary—a place immersed in nature, tradition, and history.
